Description
1 Pair of JBL C60 Sovereign I S-8R Speakers in Golden Oak Born James Martini in 1902 in Millwood, Illinois, the founder of JBL changed his name to James Bullough Lansing for reasons that are lost to history. As a boy he showed an early interest in the emerging electronics and audio technologies, and at the age of 12 he built a radio transmitter that was powerful enough to reach the Great Lakes Naval Station of Chicago nearly 200 miles away. Naval personnel were soon dispatched to supervise the dismantling... This auction is offering one of the finest original pair of C60 Sovereign I S8R package speakers that eBay will ever see. This pair has been registered in the Lansing Heritage Speaker RegistryThe Sovereign S8R is comprised of exactly the same components as the (earlier) infamous JBL Paragon, only utilizing a passive radiator vs. folded horn enclosure for its' extended bass. The Sovereign is in every way more acoustically accurate than the Paragon enclosure. This is not an opinion, but a FACT. Please do your research if you have a hard time taking this in. Some Background: This set of Sovereigns was originally purchased in '74 from Standard Audio & Hi-Fi of Salt Lake City, UT. The original owner bought two pair at the same time! On top of this, he had L300s, a B380, and L250t's. All of his stereo equipment was babied and in amazing condition. He told me that all of his Sovereigns were purchased on the same day, however, the serial numbers do not correspond with the receipt he provided me with. This is possibly due to an error at the time of sale, or perhaps there was a second receipt that I did not receive. I am including a copy of it. The original copy will stay with the 2nd pair, as their serial numbers were recorded on it.Functionality:These speakers have been my prized possession for some time now. They are an absolutely jaw-dropping speaker. If you have not heard the 375, you have not experienced true midrange. This is definitely my favorite pair of speakers I have heard/owned to date. I am not looking forward to their departure. This is the ONLY pair of Sovereign/Olympus in over 6 months of watching eBay to be offered truly READY-TO-GO. Every other pair has had their original white "Lansaloy" surrounds on the woofers. The Lansaloys were discontinued and replaced with foam in '74. Any existing Lansaloy surrounds will be hard and brittle, and not allow for woofer excursion. Once the woofer starts to move, the surround will break and you will need to have them reconed. The LE15A Woofers were just fully reconed by a JBL authorized service center, and picked up on 08/05/08. I was sure to picture them before reinstalling. They were installed less than a week ago and used only for an hour or so to assure they are fully functioning. They have yet to be broken in, and will provide the buyer with many years of listening pleasure. The massive 375 Midrange compression drivers still have all of their red wax seals. They sound simply perfect. The L91 Acoustic Lenses are perfect, with no breaks or cracks. The H93 Horns with huge 2" throat are also perfect and original. The 075 "Bullet" Ring Radiators retain 7 of their 8 wax seals. They are mint, and the aluminum facing of these are some of the cleanest I have seen. The PR-15 Passive Radiators are in excellent condition and completely original and untouched. The LX5 and N7000 Crossover networks are all original and in perfect condition.I did notice a couple of dead spots on one of the HF pots. I sprayed them (shiny area on crossover) with Rid-Ox, and there is now only a couple of spots with static. The winning bidder should continue to exercise this knob to work out the static.Note: The picture of the components grouped outside of the cabinets was taken prior to the reconing. I took that opportunity to record serial numbers and ohm readings, and those are available if interested.Condition:These speakers are very near perfect. You simply will not find a cleaner example available for sale for a very long time.As evidenced by the pictures, the cabinets are in excellent condition. There are a couple of SMALL dings and various light scratching. There is an area where the finish on the top of one speaker is starting to fade, however the veneer is not damaged in this area. The grilles are in fine shape. No tears to the fabric or breaks to the frame. There are a couple of dings on the grilles, and one has a stain on the fabric that I did not notice until the flash of my camera brought it out. You have to look for it to find it. Their condition truly amazes me considering their age of 34 years. Please review the pictures. Included:Original full color 1974 JBL Catalog, Three (1, 2, 3) original component Installation and Use manuals (fold-out type pamphlets), the receipt for the recone work, and a copy of the Standard Audio receipt mentioned before. Shipping & Payment:I require that payment for the final bid price be made within 48 hours. If you plan on using PayPal, I will require an eCheck. If you plan to pay otherwise, please contact me prior to bidding. Payment for shipping/packing is to be made after full shipping arrangements have been determined. Firstly, winning bidder may choose to arrange shipping, or:If needed, I can pack/pallet these speakers for $200 including labor and material.Shipping within the Continental 48 States will be a flat $500.International must arrange pick-up from 84044, Magna, UT.I would prefer pick-up, but am willing to help with shipping. Because local pickup is an option, I will require a few days after the auction to pack/prepare if necessary. Please contact me for a phone number to discuss shipping or any other questions you may have. Please review my feedback. I am very critical about how I describe an item. No disappointment here!
